Massive Fire Destroys The Holland Casino In Groningen
A massive fire engulfed and destroyed The Holland Casino in Groningen on Sunday. The fire which was discovered at around 7:00 a.m. got under control around 3:30 p.m. by the efforts of the firefighters. No casualties were reported, but billions of euros worth property were damaged.
The firefighters responded to the automatic fire alarm at 7:02 a.m. on Sunday. The colleagues from the Drenthe fire department responded to help when the firefighters were struggling to bring the fire under control.
In all, it took 150 firefighters, 16 fire trucks and five platforms to work the fire down, said the fire department commander, Roelf Knoop.
All the residents from the nearby streets and hotels from the casino were evacuated. No serious injuries were reported in the fire. One person had to be treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics but did not have to get to the hospital.
Many shops and restaurants were unable to open on Sunday in the city centre. The casino property is lost along with a few dozen cars which were still in the casino’s parking garage.
There is no account of how much money and chips were in the casino slot machine and safe. As Saturday nights are the busiest time for the casino, so there could be a considerable amount lost.
The cause of the fire is yet unknown.
